About

Through the years, the mission and vision of The Woman’s Board has been steadfast, and its members remain committed in their support of RUSH University Medical Center.

The Mission of The Woman’s Board of RUSH University Medical Center is to work in partnership with the medical center to help it provide the best health care for the individuals and diverse communities that RUSH serves through our support of the medical center’s outstanding patient care, research and community outreach initiatives.

The Woman’s Board of RUSH University Medical Center is one of the oldest woman’s boards in Chicago. The board from Presbyterian Hospital was started in 1884, and the board from St. Luke’s Hospital was started in 1892. In 1956, the Trustees of the two hospitals merged to form Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital, and in 1959, the two woman’s boards merged. In 1969, when the hospital joined Rush Medical College and activated the Rush-Presbyterian – St. Luke’s Medical Center, the woman’s board became the Woman’s Board of Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center. In 2003, the Trustees of Rush believed that it was time to simplify the name of the medical center to Rush University Medical Center, a name that encompasses all aspects of a major medical center. To follow that leadership, the Woman’s Board became the Woman’s Board of Rush University Medical Center.

The Woman’s Board has had a remarkable history of partnership with the Medical Center, supporting its educational programs and the quality care provided at Rush. Through the support of two gift shops within the hospital, the Fall Benefit, the Spring Luncheon, and by the personal financial contributions of Woman’s Board members, funds have been raised for scholarships and for programs in nursing, social services, the Rush Day School, and epilepsy education.

The Woman’s Board maintains support of the Chapel and the Pastoral Care requests. The Patient’s Library, which the Board established in 1904, has been an important resource for patients and employees. The Board established the Chair of Pediatrics and the Chair of Child Psychiatry, and provided major support for The Woman’s Board Institute for Depression and Research, The Woman’s Board Cancer Treatment Center, The Woman’s Board Nursery, Rush University Children’s Hospital, two major research areas, the Woman’s Board Heart and Vascular Center, the Rush University Cancer Center and the most recent project, Rush’s Road Home Program.
